#5442 - Jim's Pub, Liberty, PA - 10/13/23

Jim's Pub, Liberty, PA (currently closed)
Jim's Pub in Liberty, PA, a few blocks from the Youghiogheny River, southeast of Pittsburgh, has been "temporarily closed" for several months now, i.e. as I write this in October 2026. When I visited it three years ago I was convinced it had a solid case for the most divey bar in the greater Pittsburgh area.

The darkness, the clutter, the inoperable taps, the long unused stove covered in crap, the shredded bar seats, and the cash-only terms all contributed to this impression.

It was owned by bartender Charles' aunt, whom I presume is Barbara Knicely. I was informed in the bar that despite the longstanding name, Jim was only involved with it for one year, before his wife divorced him and he was out of the picture. I've also read multiple comments by locals saying that it was once Steve's, and indeed newspaper's from November 1990 show the property being transferred from Steve Gulasky Jr. to James O. Knicely. I've found very limited info on the history of the place and would love to hear any more details others might have.

It doesn't look it, but real estate records indicate that it was built in 1900. I chatted with patron Doug told me he's been coming since he was legal drinking age, and remembers when it was filled with men from the mill. His father drank here before him.

I'm also puzzled by the current status. I see no hints that it is reopening anytime soon, but it also doesn't seem to be for sale? As a fan of divey bars I am hoping I'll be able to return someday, and without it being radically changed.
