#541 - Pat O'Brien's, New Orleans - 5/8/2007
O'Brien's was established during prohibition in a city that was not too keen on that concept. It converted from speakeasy to official bar after the 21st amendment, and a few years later moved from the 600 block of St. Peter Street to the current location in an 18th century building a block away. It is the birthplace of the Hurricane, purportedly during a competition to create the best rum drink to help sell extra rum that bar owners were forced to buy in order to obtain whiskey. It is raucous and touristy, featuring a flaming fountain and dueling piano bar, and also hosting locals for various birthdays, wedding receptions, and such. It is a must-stop for any but the most fussy of bar fans, and though they certainly do not make the best Hurricane in town, it is virtually required.
