Her Dad had seven kids and her Stepmom had seven kids when they married. I actually met Nancy through her stepsister, Elena Berkey. I've lost touch with both of them over time, wish I could recall Nancy's dad's name. He was a really good guy. It wasn't the same after he and Elena's mom, Joyce stepped down. My favorite part of working there was the regulars.
Do you by chance know what Nancy's dads name was? For some reason, it's not easy to find on the net.Nat the Cathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03279308600173319379noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23563760.post-82783077748099856952024-02-18T13:34:12.013-08:002024-02-18T13:34:12.013-08:00Missed a few, my wife’s Italian father owned the s...Missed a few, my wife’s Italian father owned the sea hound @11081/2 first ave. Nowhere shows that more than the Opal. A lot of bars on this page are mentioned as "dive bars" but that term doesn't come close to encompassing what the Opal was in the 1990s. At that time the customer base was shaky handed old winos and bag ladies with bloodshot eyes. No one under 50 or 60 seemed to ever be inside and it was a dimly lit, dusty, depressing and forbidding place that seemed to be hell's waiting room for the terminal alcoholic. Photos of the depression era Bowery in NYC would give you more an idea of the ambiance and crowd than any of the yuppie hipster "dive bars" in T-Town now.

They've completely changed it and it has great food and atmosphere now. It is a jarring difference for the few who remember it from 25 years ago.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23563760.post-30181108722589561942023-06-03T20:52:10.481-07:002023-06-03T20:52:10.481-07:00This was the lunchtime hangout spot for countless ... This was the lunchtime hangout spot for countless local businessmen, lawyers/judges, and politicians for decades. Movers and shakers in the Tacoma "connected" Old Town scene. Known for ferocious drinks and good, if pricey, food. Dinner was a different crowd but the bar on a weekday lunch was something else. If that bar could talk it would probably unearth a zillion skeletons in Tacoma's past.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23563760.post-46232277907934064332023-05-14T19:09:42.917-07:002023-05-14T19:09:42.917-07:00Enjoyed it there in 60's loved it great people...Enjoyed it there in 60's loved it great people. If it’s still the same today as it was back then, the restaurant area to the right when you walk in the front door was not there. That area was a little apartment. My grandparents Virginia and Albert Campbell owned the establishment and stayed in the apartment on weekends. There was often live music, my grandfather was the drummer, my grandmother, a wonderful dancer and a great hostess. There was no toilet in the apartment, so I’d have to use the bathroom in the tavern..I was always so intrigued walking into forbidden territory as a wee lass..as I passed through I couldn’t help but walk as slowly as possible to gaze at the bar back ..oh how I loved the Pick & Shovel..sometimes I think of it as ‘home’ ..Thank you for allowing me to post this short sweet memory of yesteryear..all my love.

As Ever,
Heidi Virginia CampbellHeidi-Virginia:https://www.blogger.com/profile/00065062938189396566noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23563760.post-6445871439731227072022-07-16T11:58:17.677-07:002022-07-16T11:58:17.677-07:00Hey Pete, I'm glad that you're still pursu...Hey Pete, I'm glad that you're still pursuing this worthy endeavor. If so, it's not actually the case that these were not printed during WWII -- I have the Tacoma directories for every year during the war except 1943 (and I have a phone directory from that year). Unfortunately we are in the process of moving and these volumes are packed, but I'm making a note to my research to-do list to take a look whenever we are settled in (and update the entry accordingly).

Cheers, and thanks for bringing the this to my attention!petergahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15157426996448419793noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23563760.post-72395299129792935652022-02-13T02:06:58.477-08:002022-02-13T02:06:58.477-08:00Parky's first appears in the city directory ci...Parky's first appears in the city directory circa 1939 as Parky's Cigar Emporium,on Jefferson not long after the name became Parky's Beer Parlour still on Jefferson no number address listed there were no directories during the War paper and ink were reserved to the military first, after the war the directory had Parky on McKinley 3523 and 3527 then 3551 in 58. curious is the middle of that block addresses never appear until 58, but photos back to the 1920's shows buildings being there, The Emperorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04068159634305327407noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23563760.post-20857167951554830902022-01-24T18:25:57.085-08:002022-01-24T18:25:57.085-08:00My father was the bar tender and night manager the...My father was the bar tender and night manager there from about 1947 (??) until about 1959. The building was built in 1914 within a month and a half after a fire had burned the town my dad started purchasing it in 1975 a month prior to my birth. Woman were not allowed in the bar until around that time as it was a place for the men to go and there was also only 1 bathroom however prior owners had a candy area and ice cream area up front where kids could come in and get sweets. Where the mural and jukebox is located is where the original bar uses to be we had to move it when it became law we had to serve food. Thanks so much for visiting!
